Weekly Subscription

Farm Fresh Food

What’s in the weekly box? Is it right for me?

The weekly subscription runs from July through October and the best way to get peak season produce directly from the farm.  The produce in the bag will change each week by what is freshest and in-season. You can expect to get three to four different veggies and herbs valuing approximately $15-20. One week might be salad greens, peas and garlic; a week later in the season might feature tomatoes, basil, summer squash and sprouts.

We’ll send an email each week saying what is in the upcoming box and give recipe ideas and hints for preparation. You’ll have the option to add on extra items, change what’s in your box, or let us know to pause while you’re on vacation.

Not sure a weekly box is right for you?  Individual produce is sold first-come, first-served through our weekly email fresh sheet. You can also stock up in addition to your subscription for making sauce during those tomato months! This is also a great way to get add on items, like eggs by the dozen, sourdough bread, or preserves. Make sure to sign up below to get the weekly fresh sheet of what’s available.

Our Approach

We grow all of our vegetables pesticide and chemical free. All of our fertilizers or additives are natural and OMRI approved. We use a minimum tillage, regenerative agriculture approach designed to build healthy, living soils.  Our methods include a permanent bed system, cover cropping, crop rotations, diverse growing selections, and practicing a less tractor-reliant agriculture. We believe in promoting and preserving biodiversity and developing good soil for those who come after us.

Local Food

Did you know that the average meal travels 1,500 miles before it reaches your plate? Produce is often harvested before it is ripe and shipped across the country, resulting in flavor loss, a shorter lifespan, and food waste. The flavor of a vine-ripened tomato or a frost-sweetened beet simply does not compare. Our produce is harvested at the optimal time for peak flavor and freshness and is only a few miles away,  so you have longer to enjoy it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Learn How it Works!

WHERE CAN I BUY YOUR PRODUCE?

Due to limited quantities- we are a small farm, after all!-  all sales are currently exclusive to our email newsletter. Weekly vegetable boxes are available for purchase as well as a la carte produce when harvests allow. Stay tuned for future locations and farmer’s markets as we grow.

IS THE FARM CERTIFIED ORGANIC?

We are not certified organic at this time. That said, we do follow organic growing procedures, only use OMRI-approved fertilizers and additives on the farm, and practice minimum-tillage, regenerative soil-building methods to produce food that is both healthy and delicious. Check out the About Our Farm for more details.

I'M GOING ON VACATION. WHAT DO I DO WITH MY SUBSCRIPTION?

Your weekly subscription can be transferred to a friend while you are away. Same pick up times and places will apply- just let us know! Or, you can pause your subscription during your vacation. Please email at shell@smallfarmerpgh.com with at least one week’s notice.

I'M A CHEF/RESTAURANT OWNER/DISTRIBUTOR INTERESTED IN PURCHASING!

We’d be happy to have you on board! Please email shell@smallfarmerpgh.com to inquire.

I DON'T LIKE A CERTAIN VEGETABLE IN THIS WEEK'S BOX- CAN I SUBSTITUTE IT?

If there’s something you’re not sure about, I encourage you to give it a try, especially just once- you never know where you’ll find your next favorite meal. In-season, just-picked produce often has a different quality from items that have been picked unripe and shipped across the country (I don’t eat tomatoes in winter at all, but I will eat them like candy when they’re ripe in the fields!). We’re also happy to give preparation tips and recipes if you’re not sure what to do with something.

That said, we want you to be happy with your subscription. If you know you won’t use an item in your box, please let us know 48 hours before your pickup day. We’re happy to substitute for other items when quantities allow.

WHERE DO I PICK UP MY BOX?

We currently have three pickup locations- one in East Liberty, one in Fox Chapel/Waterworks, and a farm pickup day. We ask that you choose one location for the season when starting your subscription. Pickup addresses will be sent after signup.

Want a different pickup location? Let us know. We’re happy to setup a new pickup hub if there is interest in a new area.
